Week Three of the challenge and I’m finally making traction! A few problems have been solved, fabrics finalized and ordered items are starting to arrive in this last week. I’ll break that down below as I think there’s some good info in there that you can use :).
Project Journal
The painting got started. When we first moved into this house is was very white. Except the trim. That had a weird yellow color. About a three years ago we re-did our kitchen and replaced all the flooring on first floor with some beautiful oil finished medium grey hardwoods. At the same time, I replaced all the door hardware from 80’s gold to a more modern matte black and had the doors all painted a fresh white. We had also added crown molding and taller baseboards.
The plan is to paint the bedroom a soft blue. As mentioned in week one, always a personal favorite and it passed the husband test.
Challenge #1 – Paint Color
I SO hoped I had selected my paint color correctly the first time. Sadly? Not so much. We put a test patch on the wall and the results were a little less than stellar. And while the color (called SW Lullaby) sounds perfect for a bedroom, it ended up being more nursery and less boudoir.
So now I’m back to the drawing board and my painter will be here in the morning! Yikes.
Often when you make a change in a design plan, it seems inconsequential at first. But designing a space is a bit like a Rubik’s Cube. You remember these, right? They start all organized and matching but with one twist, you’ve blown it up!
Some GOOD News
For the upstairs, of course the first thing to do was get rid of the weird yellow trim paint! New hardware is going on and the walls are supposed to be painted on Monday but when we put the sample color up I’m now not sure.
Here’s the molding as it began, complete with 1989 shiny brass orb door knobs. Quite the stunner in their day but we’ve moved on.
And here’s the freshened up version. My favorite shade of white, nice semi-gloss and a matte black door lever.
Another holdover from the eighties are the brass closet doors. We’ve already established that this master bedroom has a fairly – odd – floor plan but we’re all about embracing it and that includes the doors. I wasn’t ready to jump into replacement and since I am accenting with gold, I opted to add molding around the full frame.
Here’s what it looked like before we started. Sorry for the blurry picture but you get the idea. Construction of an new closet wall and door will happen next year – for now, I just wanted a refresh.
